Creating a compelling fan engagement experience is vital for sports organizations. One of the biggest reasons for this is that having the highest amount of fan engagement correlates with driving the highest revenue and valuation. Ticketcity.com did a study on four major leads including the MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA using the criteria of Average total attendance of all games , Average home attendance, Average home game ticket price, Percentage of stadium capacity filled at home games, Facebook likes & Facebook “talking about” , and Twitter following to determine fan engagement.
We looked at the fan engagement leaders in each league and examined each team’s revenue and valuation for 2013 according to Forbes. What we found out was that each team that led their league in fan engagement also came in the top 3 of revenue and valuation every time. In fact, the Yankees, Cowboys, and Toronto Maple Leafs all were #1 in both value and revenue and the Bulls were #3 in both categories.
The correlation between fan engagement and revenue and value further validates the need for creating excellent fan engagement experiences. The truth is irrefutable.
